Milkweeds for Monarchs
Does your property happen to include a sunny patch of ground that's looking for a purpose? New research reveals that for every monarch butterfly that makes it to the species' wintering grounds in Mexico, 30 milkweed plants are needed. With the population now in an alarming free-fall, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has issued an "all hands on deck" plea and--because of this area's culture of caring for nature--they have turned to folks in the Chicago region for help in jump-starting the butterfly's recovery. Happily, you can choose from a variety of milkweeds, each suitable to different garden designs and growing conditions. Bonus: deer find milkweed distasteful.
