Buckthorn Replacements

Isn't it time to get rid of that awful buckthorn, but you still want privacy?  Here's a list of medium to fast growing shrubs for less than sunny areas that will beautify your property and benefit nature:

Hazelnut or filbert (Corylus americana) -grows in full-partial sun with average soil moisture

Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) - grows well in full-partial sun with average to wet soil

Witch hazel (Hammelis virginiana) - grows well in full-partial sun with average soil moisture

Spicebush (Lindera benzion) - grows well in sun and shade with average to moist soil

Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) - grows in full-partial sun with average to wet soil

Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica) - grows in full-partial sun with average to dry soil

Wild black current (Ribes americana) - grows in full sun-shade with average to wet soil.  Nice when paired with a taller species for optimum screening

Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) - grows in full-partial sun with average soil moisture

Nannyberry viburnum (Viburnum lentago) - grows in full-partial sun with average to wet soil

Blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium)* - grows in full-partial shade with average soil moisture
