American Linden - Tilia americana
The fragrant flowers not only increase this plant's landscape value, but it also makes for an outstanding tea. Very tall and slender tree under normal circumstances but if the tree is stressed it will tend to sucker from the base and form a multi-trunked plant. Its leaves are rather large, a little a bigger than a large hand and very soft to the touch with a agreeable light yellow fall color. Tolerates some shade but does best in full sun on mesic to moist soils. The wood of the linden is a very sought after wood by wood carvers because of its clear grain.
Mature size: 50 - 70' high, 40 - 50' wide
